Cleaning hands with soap and water helps reduce the spread of infections. Important moments include after using the toilet and before preparing food or eating. Hand hygiene complements other prevention measures rather than guaranteeing protection.
Wet hands with clean running water and apply soap. Rub palms, backs of hands, between fingers and under nails; scrub for at least 20 seconds, rinse and dry with a clean towel or air dryer. Wash after changing nappies, after coughing or nose-blowing, and before food handling or caring for someone who is ill. Clean hands complement safe water and sanitation.
