Abdominal pain: avoiding assumptions
Common symptoms and when to seek medical help · Version 3

Abdominal pain can arise from many conditions. Severe or sudden pain, or pain with other concerning symptoms, requires prompt assessment. Location alone does not establish the cause. This overview is not a complete triage tool.
Sudden or severe abdominal pain needs immediate emergency assessment. Fainting, blood in vomit, black stools or severe illness also needs urgent care. Mention when pain began and whether pregnancy is possible. Location cannot establish an ulcer, appendicitis or another cause. Recurring less severe pain still deserves assessment rather than repeated self-medication. This guide cannot determine urgency for every person.
