Why antenatal care matters

Care during pregnancy and childbirth helps prevent and manage complications. Skilled professionals and timely access to appropriate services are important. Pregnancy concerns need individual assessment; online information cannot establish that a pregnancy is safe.
Antenatal care allows professionals to assess the pregnant person and baby, discuss nutrition, offer appropriate tests and identify concerns. Ask how to arrange visits and what to do between them. Pregnancy nutrition should include a varied diet; discuss supplements or eating difficulties with the maternity team instead of choosing doses online. Heavy bleeding, severe abdominal pain, seizures or fainting requires immediate assessment. This guide cannot set an individual schedule.
